Kaptain Kool and the Kongs (1978)

How many of you watched the Saturday morning shows brought to us by Sid and Marty Krofft - Pufnstuf, Lidsville, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Krofft Supershow? Well, remember that groovy band, Kaptain Kool and the Kongs? I was in my early teens when they came along, but I remember I would still watch the Krofft shows, and I thought Kaptain Kool and the Kongs were great! I remember that at first they were all dressed crazy, but then looked a little more toned-down. Who was your favorite? Superchick was mine - I always thought she was really cute. I don't know what happened to any of the band members except for Michael Lembeck (Kaptain Kool), who later appeared on "One Day At a Time" and is now a well-respected TV director.

Well, I really can't remember how I found this album - eBay or Half-Price Books or a garage sale - but I was ecstatic when I found it! Plus, as you can see from the picture, this is a demo album - the ones they would give to radio stations to play, although I doubt that this one ever was played on the air. Unfortunately, the sticker that says it's a demo record covers up the adorable Superchick, but I'm not going to remove the sticker because I like to keep my records as close as possible to their original condition. But, to make up for that, I've also included a video below where Superchick (Debra Clinger) is singing lead! So, I hope y'all enjoy both this album and the video!

Track listing for Kaptain Kool & the Kongs:

Side 1:
1. And I Never Dreamed
2. This Time
3. You Put Some Love in My Life
4. When You Feel It
5. True Love is On Its Way

Side 2:
1. The Whole World Will Be Dancin'
2. Crazy Girl
3. You Saved Me
4. Melanie
5. Free
6. Sing Me a Song

I used to watch this show (along with pretty much all of the Krofft shows). Thanks for posting this.

Great YouTube clip! But the riff that the tune "Don't Throw it Away" is built on--it sounds like the theme from The Rockford Files. Was Mike Post involved with this music?

Everything all right there in TX? You haven't posted anything in a month now... Hope all is well.

Where you at?

Hmmm... no email address listed. While I commend you for getting rarities like this circulating, it sounds like the needle was broken on your record player when you ripped the Kaptain Kool and the Kongs LP. I ripped my copy of the album, did some digital cleanup... it sounds much better than your copy. You're more than welcome to snag the mp3s and post them to Stax o'Wax: http://www.box.net/shared/u0pl0rym6k

does anyone have any kool and the kongs from the first season on video tape or any method, that they would be interested in posting, trading, selling. I'd love to find some full episodes or at least them singing. Can the clip of "don't throw it away" be reupped? I'd love to see it. I remember the song.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting "turkey" in person and was a super nice guy. Got all my old Kaptain Kool stuff signed. He works with http://www.innercityslickers-us.org/ now helping troubled youth.

i too wish that the 1st season songs album had been released instead of being shelved. Have been told that it was contract negotiations that killed. i was particularly interested in those songs as they were written and produced by Alan, Wayne & Merrill Osmond. As were the music from Electro Woman and Dyna Girl.

Hey Vinnie,

i see in your mp3's, you have some of the mp3's from season 1... were from the tv sound?

The one that i would love to get is Time is An Old Man!
